True Desire

“Inherent in having the desire is the mechanics for its spontaneous fulfilment.” – Dr. Deepak Chopra

When control and judgementalism from others causes self-judgement in us we essentially replace our true desires with false desires, which we sometimes also allow ourselves to believe are our true desires. The Mastery of Desire is the Awareness of this effect, such that we can respond and prevent it dominating our lives any time we sense things are not quite on song for us. In any moment, you’re either allowing yourself to honour your true desire in that moment, or you’re not.

De-sire

Desire doesn’t always mean something as obvious as getting a new car, or a splendid feast, or bars of gold. A wider understanding of desire is any way we truly are in a given moment. That encompasses all the big things, the small things, the subtle details, and even simply resting, as appropriate.

The etymology of desire is from the Latin ‘desiderare’, meaning ‘to long for or wish for’. A further Latin interpretation has been suggested: ‘of the father’, with ‘de-’ meaning ‘of’, and ‘sire’ meaning ‘father’. Correct or not, this interpretation nicely expresses the relationship between ourselves, our desires, and our Being. We started this section with a pertinent quote from Deepak Chopra: “Inherent in having the desire is the mechanics for its spontaneous fulfilment.” Colin Turner also eloquently explains the nature of desire: “The importance of desire is such that with its power you already have the capacity to manifest, or attract, whatever you want in your life. The very fact that you have a ‘desire’, the Latin root of which translates as ‘of the father’, means that you have the God-given ability to achieve it. In other words, you would be incapable of holding a desire unless you had the capability to create its reality…”
