What is Stress?

In physics, stress, for example on a piece of wood, is not caused by a single force acting upon it, but by two or more forces or factors acting on it at the same time.

At some point during your school days you might have experimented with holding your ruler down firmly on a desk, with about half of it hanging over the edge, and then pushing down on it. If you had a ‘shatterproof’ ruler made of Perspex, the ruler made a ‘twang’ vibrating sound and movement. If your ruler was made of wood, the same treatment would probably break it.

The point at which the ruler overlapped the desk was the stress point of the system. This is how Stress works in us, too. When we have a trust of what is the single best action for us in a given situation, we experience no Stress in taking that action. It flows. But if we have self-judgement causing us to doubt ourselves or deny ourselves that flow of Choice and action, we have a second force acting upon us in a different direction – and we experience Stress!

“The solution to stress is to yield … to self-love.” – James Blacker
