One of the ways in which our buried character traits, characteristics and repressed personality aspects show up is by our Projection of them onto other people.
Because we are not allowed to acknowledge our own capacity for these qualities in ourselves – but they are nevertheless true underneath the surface – we notice and admire them (or possibly dislike them!) in others.
Projected Character and Characteristics: The Other-Admiration Principle
The very fact that you can appreciate the quality in others shows that you yourself have the capacity for it, however, in your case it hasn’t been allowed to be honoured.
This experience may also ‘press our buttons’ if it causes pain that they are allowed to own the quality, but we are not.
We might call this ‘The Other-Admiration Principle’, which is a part of the principle of Projection.
